Gift Ideas: Watch Repair

Just as timepieces have evolved through the centuries, so too have the watch repair tools used to fix them. With the technology used to make these watches changing, the need for more sophisticated repair instruments has emerged.

Tools Used

These tools can be used to fix intricate parts, lubricate the components and clean them. Unlike in the past, today’s utilities can repair both the antique timepiece and the modern wristwatch. There are many different utilities available, but among the most commonly used are tweezers and screwdrivers.

Other essential tools are emery cloth, adhesive, lamp or light, oil, cleaning solvents and different types of measuring equipment. The other utilities that may be needed are a watch case opener and closer, nippers, punches, pliers, demagnetizer and hand pullers.

Screwdrivers and Tweezers

The screwdriver is used for unfastening or locking up the various components of the watch. The screws with revolving tops are among the most widely utilized. Tweezers are often used during the preliminary stages of any timepiece repair.

The style 2 and 3 tweezers are widely utilized for handling the smallest timepiece components. When looking for tweezers, check if it has sharp or parallel ends. The nonmagnetic tweezers are rust resistant.

Oil and Other Cleaning Solutions

Oil is vital for cleansing the components of the timepiece. Other cleaning solutions are also included in many watch repair tool kits. Most professional repairmen like to use waterless cleaning solutions. There are also ultrasonic machines used to clean more intricate parts. In other cases, peg wood sticks are employed to fix elaborate designs.

Other Tools

If you want to have your own tool kit, there are a few other things you may want to purchase. This includes the battery tester. These look like volt meters and are used for checking the battery life. Using this tool you can determine if the battery is broken or not.

A universal case holder is something else you will want to have. This is to ensure the timepiece has a specific container. The clip spring pliers are also useful for grabbing the small components. The link pin holder is another handy tool. This allows you to dismantle the links and pins that keep the band together.

There are many other watch repair tools, but these are the most important. By understanding how these components work, you will be able to do some of the basic repairs to keep that timepiece running.
